Modern Oriental Style

The new years brings a new spirit in changing  for the better including arranging your home. This has been the case for interior designer, Yuni Jie who creates a blend of interior using modern style with Chinese decorative ornaments that have the world immerse in its subtle style. Her creation on an apartment can give us inspiration to create our own.

The oriental style interior can be associated with decorative carvings, intricate motif design and dominant red colour as well as gold. With the change of time, the basis of design has changed as well.

Among the elements the shapes and details are simplified, the use of contrasting colours and more traditional Chinese accessories are displayed. However different the new style come to be, interior designer must create a state of balance, order and harmony to the interior spaces. This is what Yuni  Jie have conceived in the design of an apartment with 360 sqm of space  located in South Jakarta.

The oriental atmosphere is strongly felt with calligraphy carving on the wood panel, bamboo basket, wood boxes and the chair cushion with hand made Chinese fabric

When entering the apartment, the foyer complete with a built-in seat and arrangement of nyatoh wood panel cover the wall, looks welcoming. To alleviate the intensity of the lighting on this transitional room, Yuni creates a gradation of brownish tone on the wall and wood panels in order to make a more relaxed atmosphere. As an accent in the room, she chooses red cinnamon paint for the wall and complemented with various accessories with the same tone such as the pillow cushions and the desk lamp.

Moving on from the foyer, we will find a multifunction room that is filled with a set of table and bamboo chairs. The set is arranged adjacent to the family sitting area. Yuni plans the room to resemble a tearoom in a traditional Chinese home yet with a more modern function as an informal sitting area. Inspired by the shape of classic furniture from the Ming Dynasty era (1368-1644), minimalist vertical lines, geometrical cubes and dark tone wood finish are applied to create a modern yet oriental nuance. This adoption of style exposes the simple shape of classic Chinese furniture just perfect for this modern interior. The red fabric used is meant to create an accent in the room.

This adoption of style exposes the simple shape of classic Chinese furniture just perfect for this modern interior. The red fabric used is meant to create an accent in the room.

The Composition of the simple lines on the transparent partition at the family area comes from a simplified design improvisation of A Chinese carved latticework

The wall at this dining room is decorated with wood panel and wallpaper in terracotta tone that appears harmonious on this dominant wooden furniture or simple decorative wall elements

Traditional crafts from the bamboo country arranged on the table enhance the oriental nuance. For example a set of teapots made from clay, a pair of calligraphy paintings, a basket made of bamboo and boxes of wood in lacquer finish give that strong oriental look. Additionally, Yuni also designed a pair of credenza with the detailing to adopt a geometrical cube typical of classic Chinese style. A pair of sitting lamp made from red silk fabric reminds us of lampion (paper lantern) in a more modern sense. As a divider in the room, a transparent permanent partition built from the floor to the ceiling therefore still giving an unobtrusive view of the interior.

Inspired from tearoom in traditional Chinese homes, this multi-function room is decorated with a set of bamboo table and chairs that adopts a classic Ming Dynasty style.

Inspired by partition in craved latticework, Yuni also applies geometrical lines and cubical shapes in a more simplified design to become a divider. The composition of lines and the beauty of wood veins are an eye-catcher. To give a sense of comfort on the sitting area of the family room, the sofa are arranged with pillows with hand-made fabric from China in red-yellow colour with a symbolic Chinese character.

The décor on a the wall at the dining room uses half wallpaper and the other wood panels. The terracotta colour of the wallpaper looks harmonious next to the dominant wood panels on this room. As a decorative element, every panel is made in square wood and bamboo. Other furnishing is the low credenza that uses a Chinese coin-like shape handles to blend with the oriental nuance. The table lamp inspired from art deco era in green-yellowish tone makes the room appear elegant. For the bedroom and study room Yuni exposes the furniture and atmosphere in modern style taken consideration of the user`s taste with a bit of oriental touches to keep in consistent with the overall theme.

The oriental touch seen on the decoration on the study room looks more neutral such as the hand-woven fabric, wooden boxes. chair pillows and wooden candleholders

The children bedroom looks a bit different from the rest with the dominant wall paint in light gray, furnishing of dark wood tone and the chair cushion in red for its accent

The cream chocolate atmosphere looks modern more dominant on this main bedroom with soft furnishing such as the headboard, chair cushion and curtains

For example the children bedroom looks a bit different with a dominant light gray paint work, dark brown finishing of the furniture and the cushion coverings in red colour as accent. The study room is more neutral with the wall painted in off-white colour the built-in furniture designed in low cabinet and long rack. The oriental touches can be seen on the decorative side such as the hand made fabric, wooden box, chair cushions and the candleholder in wood. The natural light penetrating through the large window blocked by wooden blinds makes an interesting shadow on the wall.

Contemporary Eclectic

Contemporary eclectic is the integration of several interior styles to create a new brand character. In such a case, a good sense and special tip plays crucial role in order to have the building and spaces looking harmonious and elegant.

Stepping into this house, one will notice that there are different architectural and interior styles displaying each own detailed appearances, both functional and decorative, which become the special character and atmosphere. Through such integration of several details from diverse style, a brand new look appears to depict the owner character.

exactly what he did to his residence. He adopts the appearance of Mediterranean room separation to gain a relaxing and comfort resort atmosphere in his house. However, he minimize decorative details to fit it with the furniture and simple modern room decoration. The overall result is a brand new style of the so-called contemporary eclectic.

Rough textured paint, natural stone column and clay roof enhances the Mediterranean character of this house while decorative ornament is designed in simple lines with composition of cubes and natural colours.

The façade of this two storey building which lies secluded from public transportation is dominated by massive wall with rough and painted finishing. Columns are covered by natural rock while the roof is having saddle type look. It is the obvious that the Mediterranean character is emphasized emphasis is all over the house. However, the decoration is simple and it contains a composition of vertical and horizontal lines and geometrical shapes. This particular detail decorates the columns, windows, overhangs and also the front veranda. They are all finished by mild colours such as cream and brown. In creating natural atmosphere, the owner uses natural materials such as teakwood fibres and lava stone from Jogja, Central Java and combines them with creeping plant at the columns. The exploration of detailing in this building is repeated down to the yard inside the house.

In comparison to common house, this residence owns an open area right in the middle of the house and it is surrounded by functional rooms. This design adopts the concept of inner courtyard, with a garden or decorative pond that is commonly found in Mediterranean houses. The owner then utilizes the open area for a pool. Water element between such a solid premises gives fresh and cold impression that makes this area a centre of attention in the house. There is also a sitting area in one side, whilst the other side is where the living room, dining room and master bedroom are located. Further, the wall that surrounds this area is designed in the form of series of glass door to maximize the view, natural lighting and air circulation as well.

Transparent materials above the staircase create sufficient and bright area for the circulation

A dropped ceiling, a sloping ceiling and indirect lighting makes the atmosphere of this living room elegant, luxurious and spacious

Air circulation in this house is provided by high ceiling which is about 7 meters high, over the public area such as family room and dining room. Eventually, the owner find out that there is a difficulty in decorating such a wall and ceiling and the solution is to finish them with attached gypsum profiles around the wall at 4.40 meters height. In particular, the interior of this house applies decorative ornament from the Victorian period commonly found at European palaces. However, this house uses simpler carving. Ceiling and wall above this list is painted in clear white whilst the part below is finished by contrasting dark colour.

The walls around this open area are underlined by series of transparent doors in order to maximize the sight, sunlight and fresh air

The list becomes a regulating point for the height of window, door and placement of wall decoration such as painting and tall cabinet. In fact, all parts below the list are painted in green-grey while all the transparent doors were beautified with cream curtains. The owner cover structural columns with natural stones that are installed to follow horizon lines. He particularly designed the lighting to make the room appears more elegant, luxurious and spacious. In creating deep impression of a room, one side of the wall covered with plaited bamboo in dark blue paint so that the scare surface of it gives specific texture to the wall.

The common thread of such different styles in this house is the simplification of shape and room details. It makes the entire rooms look contemporary and suitable for variety combination of modern furniture and room accessories. Hence, the rooms are equipped with simple items forming cubes composition and producing a clean look of straight lines. In adjusting to the height and size of the rooms, the owner arranges sofa, armchair, console and tall cabinet as well as mix and matches the materials, colours, motives and textures ; for example soft cloth is covering the sofa whilst animal print motives is used for the bedcover. In lighting, he put down the light armatures, desk lamp and unique standing lamp to mould the atmosphere.

Furniture and room decoration is made in modern simplicity to emerge a clean look composition that combines materials, colour, motifs and texture.

The owner wide varieties of collection and he displays them around the house. There are paintings, crystal in various shapes and ceramic dinner set. One of his unique touches is a transparent window on the wall with the bamboo plant planted outside right in the middle of window. It is so nice that it look like a painting. That is an inspired concept of contemporary eclectic.

The room adopts Victorian style. Here, the owner attaches gypsum profiled list around the wall at the height of 4.5 metres

A Light Touch

Old architecture and modern living often run up against each other, and the Victorian terrace house of London are increasingly being revamped. One such project is this 19th century London terrace house.

The owner, Florence Lim, a Canadian who settled in London in 1994, needed to find new home when her husband, an international financier who had been working abroad, decide to return to London permanently.

A restrained limestone fireplace surround, provides a focal point at one end of the living room; the painting is by Nathalie du Pasquire, a favorite artist of the owner. The Belgian made bamboo coffee table holds a Khymer sculpture.

Lim found a large 1850s terrace just off Chelsea`s fashionable Fullham Road. Set in tree-lined street, each property is marked by a smart, pillared portico. The house provided the substantial living space the couple wanted, but was in need of renovation, having received little attention since the 1970s.

"I knew that light would be consideration, so the first thing we tried to do was to bring in as much light as we could," says Lim. She also had a clear idea of the space required and how the house should function, and had decided that the style throughout was to be clean, uncluttered and light.

Architect Voon Yee Wong was an ideal choice for such a scheme. Since arriving in London in 1985 to study at the Architecture Association, Wong has designed a number of clever interior conversions for period buildings.

As the house was in a conversation area, the façade had to be left intact. The changes to the rest of the building, however, were extreme. "All that is left of the original is the front and the two side walls," says Wong. "The development of the plant itself was like a jigsaw puzzle, trying to include all the spaces Lim needed." The elevated garden at the back was excavated to basement level, opening those rooms up to more light and providing an accessible courtyard.

A potent collaboration between a talented architect and an assured home owner resulted in the dramatic transformation of this four-storey London terrace. Only the 1850s façade was left standing: behind it they created numerous living spaces generously imbued with light.

A neutral furnishing palette, accentuates the brightness of the living room post-renovation.

The entire interior was restructured around a newly positioned staircase – finished in French oak – that provides access to the basement dining room, kitchen and family area; the open living space and study on the ground floor, and the bedroom and bathrooms situated on the first and second floors.

Christian Liaigre side chairs blend effortlessly with an antique Chinese table, a comfortable day bed, and Mark Francis painting. The Barcelona day bed by Mies van der Rohe, elegantly divides the two seating zones.

To let in even more light, Wong created a glass 'void' at the back of the house, a double-height area that opens up the main living room and extends the kitchen trough to the garden. Skylights were also added to living room and bathrooms, while the staircase is topped with a retracting glass roof.

In keeping with the ambience, the finishes throughout are clean and uncluttered. New flooring in French oak was treated with white oil to lighten and seal it. White limestone is use for the floor in the basement and courtyard, the living room fireplace surround, and the main bathroom. Lim`s favorite place. "it's place of repose and very tranquil and calm"

Furnishings were integral and pieces were chosen carefully to complement the neutral palette. There was a lot of discussion as to which pieces would fit – sometimes the design come first, sometime the furniture. Wong describes it as "a tonal exercise, rather than one of different colour. We wanted to be restricted in palette of materials, so the effect is quite uniform. The end scheme is quite monochromatic," he says. The living area is restrained, with a deliberately international feel and hints of Asia in the occasional artifact.

" I knew I didn't want to replicate my previous home," says Lim. "Every move provides an opportunity for change, which I need. I want to reinvent myself. I think we all change, and our surrounds change as we do."

Baan Chang Nag

BAAN CHANG NAG is located in a broad upland valley to the north-west of Chiangmai, Thailand's second most populous city. The cool evening air in late November and leaden grey skies are a reminder that the climate in tropical Southeast Asia is not an unvarying diet of heat and humidity. Night-time temperatures fall sufficiently for the house to require a hearth.

The setting of the house is wonderfully picturesque. Surrounded by a low white-painted masonry wall, not unlike the walls of a Buddhist temple in Northern Thailand, it sits on the bank of a man-made lake, against a background of forested hills, home to some of the hill-tribes of Chiangmai province. One enters via gatehouse in the south-east corner of the compound.

The principle of tiered roof in diminishing proportion locates this house in mainland southeast Asia.

An outdoor terrace is the focus of the dwelling.

The house is comparatively isolated; it is the forerunner of what will eventually be a low-density development of second homes and vacation houses for their owners to escape the frenzy, pollution and chaos of Bangkok.

BAAN CHANG NAG consist of four separated structures. The main building is a sturdy, square, masonry and concrete structure with a four-tiered shingle-clad roof. The precedence for this from can be seen in the numerous native roofs of the Thai/Laos/Myanmar border region but the interpretation is entirely contemporary.

The interior of living/dining area is furnished with tribal art and artifact

The new structures forms the southern "wall" of landscape courtyard, with a pool at its centre. On the eastern and northern sides of the courtyard are two reconstructed traditional Thai timber-framed houses, modified from the villagers rice barns, and on the west side a sala (an open pavilion), which permits unrestricted view of the mountain ranges.

Cars and domestic staff are accommodated in another traditional timber structure, fifty meters from the house alongside the access road.

The main house contains a comfortable living and dining area and a kitchenette. A spacious bathroom and a dressing room occupy the remainder of the lower storey of the house and staircase gives access to the main bedroom.

A traditional rice barn converted to guest bedroom

Other family members sleep in the two Thai houses which are raised on sturdy timber posts with access from a raised timber deck. Hammocks can be slung in the undercroft (the space beneath the raised floor) to accommodate guests.

Nithi Sthapitanonda's design does not slavishly imitate the past. He draws his inspiration from the vernacular and this is a house that is clearly recognizable as located in Southeast Asia, yet a transformation is made and there is a contemporary sophistication in the materials (such as anodized aluminum sliding doors), and in the details (such as the outdoor Jacuzzi)

The sala, an outdoor pavilion, is a place for quiet contemplation

The multi-roof form is one such indicator of it's "place", as are the circular timber columns which are used to support the roof overhang (trough these are possibly structurally redundant)

The courtyard is an outdoor living space. It forms an extension of the living area and the family and visitor eat, drink and relax here in the evening beneath a canopy of stars. This outdoor space is the core of the house, its focus. It is a place of calmness, solitude and peace. As night descend, one feels the presence of the comforting lights of other settlements in the surrounding hills.

The courtyard is also a wonderful place to take breakfast at dawn or to be entertained at dinner by a musician in the sala silhouetted against the setting sun.

Bathing in the open-to-sky bathroom is another magical experience. The Jacuzzi at BAAN CHANG NAG is surrounded by a high wall and plants and shrubs spill over the edge of the porcelain tub.

The name of the house is derived from the splendid teak elephant carvings used in the decoration on the interior. They are the work of Petch Viriya, one of Chiangmai's foremost elephant carvers ( Baan Chang Nag literally means "The Village of Elephant")

The house was awarded the Gold Medal of Association of Siamese Architect under Royal Patronage in 1994.

Beat obesity with bamboo stick

Beat obesity with bamboo stick
Tuesday October 30 2007 12:27 IST

Manjunath Hegde

A bamboo stick exercise class in progress

WITH changing lifestyle, obesity has become a major health problem and people rush for yoga classes or the gymnasium to find a solution. But in Shimoga, exercising with bamboo sticks with a blend of yoga and Karate techniques is popular as an effective therapy for obesity.

J Nirmala of Nirmala Anti Obesity Health Care Centre in the city offers training in bamboo stick exercise. Presently, she trains 45 persons each day under three batches at Madhura School, Rajendra Nagar Rotary East School and Sahyadri College respectively.

She also conducts free training camps of 15 days in summer season where children are taught the basics. Adults are trained in different techniques of the exercise. The positive results of this therapy is attracting more people.

"Obese people, after getting disillusioned with allopathy and other medicinal systems approach me. The first month of basic training will be common for all and the next two will be problem-specific. Stick exercise not only reduces the fat but also heals joint pains," Nirmala reveals.

Bamboo stick exercise stretches the muscles to the maximum and gives flexibility to the entire body. With systematic breathing, excess fat in the stomach, waist, and neck is reduced and the threat of heart problem is reduced with increased blood circulation. The exercise is apt for anyone who is looking for better health.

Usually, middle-aged men and women of all ages suffering from various obesity-related problems prefer this exercise. "Among teenage girls, obesity is the main cause of irregular periods and hormone tablets harm their health. Stick exercise gives relief in one month and it also boon to those women who cannot have children due to obesity," Nirmala says.

Nirmala is also an expert in yoga, horse riding, home-made medicines and Reiki. At her health-care centre, aerobics and floor exercise are also taught. She is popularising the art of bamboo stick exercise learnt from karate expert Raj Ashok Shetty of Satara, as a health-care technique

Arab children prone to obesity, Australian researcher says

Sydney - We have always known that obesity is a class issue: Australian children from low-income families are twice as likely to be very fat as children from high-income families. What's become clear from a Sydney University study is the link between obesity and some ethnic groups: Australian children of Middle Eastern ancestry are four times more likely to be very fat than those from white families.

"It really was quite a clear relationship," said lead researcher Jenny O'Dea, noting that Pacific Islander children were more likely to be very fat than even Arab children and that Aboriginal and southern European children were twice as likely to be rotund.

Her study, based on a sample of 8,500 children aged six to 18 years, is the first in Australia to measure social class, ethnicity and obesity.

Almost one in 10 children from low-income families were obese compared with around one in 20 in high-income families. A full 17 per cent of children of Middle Eastern ethnicity were obese, compared with 5.7 per cent for Anglo children and just 4.6 per cent from an Asian background.

O'Dea said that being very fat was not considered an issue in Pacific Islander, Arab and some other cultures.

Obesity study shapes up kids

A trailblazing new study on childhood obesity shows promise in tackling the epidemic by changing a child's environment, and hundreds of kids in Somerville have narrower waistlines to show for it.

The project, Shape Up Somerville, analyzed 1,178 children in grades 1 to 3, a third of whom were assigned to a program that overhauled their lifestyles in school and at home, and about 40 percent of whom were overweight.

"What differentiates this study is we took the approach of changing multiple environments within a community," said Christina D. Economos, the study's lead investigator, a professor at Tufts University's School of Nutrition Science and Policy.

Parents were given healthy recipes, and coupons for healthy food. They started feeding kids more whole grains, fruits and vegetables, cut down on family time spent in front of the tube in favor of taking walks and other activities. Economos said getting the parents on board was key.

"We were asking them to make changes in their home, and I think they found it difficult but do-able," she said.

Getting kids to eat the healthy food was another matter.

"Even though there was a little bit of protest in the beginning, the kids got used to it," Economos said.

Children were encouraged to walk to school or their bus stop. In school, teachers started scheduling activity breaks, making gym class more rigorous and scheduling after-school activities to promote health.

The study reports "compelling" results. Because the kids are ever-growing, the result wasn't a massive weight-loss, but a decrease in body-mass index, sometimes stark enough to put a child once at risk for obesity on track to a healthy weight. Funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Blue Cross Blue Shield and United Way of Massachusetts Bay, the study is scheduled to be presented tomorrow at a Tufts symposium on health and nutrition.

Economos, a Worcester native who lives in Concord, is now working on a project to spread Somerville's success to communities all over the nation.

New potential obesity target is identified

CINCINNATI, Oct. 29 U.S. scientists have found a cell receptor that might become a target in programs designed to control obesity and prevent such ills as obesity and diabetes.

University of Cincinnati researchers said their findings about adipocyte low density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1, or LRP1, provide important clues about the biological mechanisms controlling fat transport in the body.

Using genetically altered mice, Professor David Hui and colleagues demonstrated how "knocking out" LRP1 in fat cells has a direct impact on how many lipids are transferred and deposited to different tissues. Hui said the experimental mice gained less weight, stored less fat, tolerated glucose better and expended more energy as compared with a control group.

"This receptor is expressed in numerous tissues throughout the body -- including the heart, muscles, liver and vascular wall -- but its specific functions in the different tissues are still relatively unknown," said Hui. "Our study has shown this molecule directly impacts the rate of fat transport in the body, so with further study it could be a new target for drugs aimed at controlling obesity."

The findings appear in the November issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

Beating obesity is a family affair

A NUTRITION and fitness course for children and their parents was such a success it is set to go nationwide.

WGC diet and fitness instructor Lindsey Peters, 45, set up the first pilot of the course two years ago with backing from the famous dietician, Rosemary Conley.

The scheme is the first of its kind to include children and their parents learning about diet and fitness together.

Lindsey will run the next course at Monk's Walk School, Knightsfield, WGC, from Saturday.

The six-week course is aimed at giving children the knowledge they require to help deal with weight issues and to prevent them from becoming overweight.

Lindsey said: "I am trying to enable children to make their own sensible choices and decisions regarding their food intake.

"The beauty of the course is seeing children and parents working together and gaining a good degree of knowledge regarding health and fitness now and in the future.

"I am very proud that the course is going to be run throughout the country and happy that it was first tried in WGC."

The course introduces children, aged 10 to 14, and parents to carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins and minerals, fats, sugars and salts.

It teaches them in a fun and educational way, what they are, why we need them, how our bodies use them and when to include them.

Lindsey has been a Rosemary Conley Diet and Fitness Instructor for over 13 years and runs 11 classes each week in WGC, Ware and St Albans.

The course costs £60 for a child and parent, and each child is issued with a Fit Kit which includes lots of goodies including a bag, coloured pencils and a pedometer.

Only half a dozen places are left on the course. To book yours contact Lindsey on lindseyrcdfc@aol.com or 01707 334229.

As obesity goes global, researchers seek 'drug cocktail' to curb appetites

Linda Shrieves
Orlando Sentinel
Oct. 30, 2007 12:00 AM

ORLANDO - It may be a small world, but it's getting bigger.

And bigger. And bigger.

Although Americans have become accustomed to health experts railing about the nation's obesity epidemic, the problem is not confined to American shores.

The world is rapidly becoming a fatter place.

"It's a very different world than it was a while back," said Barry Popkin, director of the University of North Carolina's Interdisciplinary Obesity Center. "The bulk of the world is fat."

Even the Mediterranean diet isn't stopping Europeans' expanding waistlines. In Italy, 42 percent of adults are overweight and 9 percent are obese, according to the World Health Organization. In France, 41 percent of adults are overweight; 11 percent obese.

So what is causing the fat boom?

Some scientists blame the changes in our diet. In developing countries such as China, lower prices for cooking oil have led to more fried foods. At the same time, food prices are declining, and people around the world are picking up Americans' bad habits: consuming fast food, sodas and other high-calorie snacks and drinks.

"Frankly, it's very hard to work off a Coke," Popkin said.

While the obesity epidemic has exploded, some scientists have been frantically trying to find a drug that will curb appetites.

The answer, some say, may be a "drug cocktail," a combination of medications that doctors would prescribe before patients become obese.

If obesity trends continue, researchers at Johns Hopkins University estimate, 75 percent of American adults will be overweight or obese in just eight years, 41 percent will be obese, and nearly 25 percent of children will be overweight or obese.

While the world's girth has grown, a small community of obesity researchers has been trying to understand the complicated network of hormones that seem to trigger overeating.

"One of the problems in obesity research has been that there are so many dead ends," said Louis J. Aronne, clinical professor of medicine at Cornell University and former president of the Obesity Society, an organization of obesity researchers. "It's a very complex system with many overlapping mechanisms."

The problem, Aronne says, is like an ever-changing puzzle. Whenever scientists think they have found a drug that will block hunger or create a feeling of fullness, the body adapts - and its survival mechanism kicks in. So far, prescription diet drugs have had limited effect, enabling dieters to lose 5 percent to 10 percent of their body weight.

"You do one thing, and your body compensates for that. So that means combination therapies are going to be the way to go," Aronne said.

That's where the drug cocktail comes in.

Because obesity has been linked to 53 diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer, Aronne thinks insurance companies will pay for drugs, rather than pay far more to treat the diseases that obesity causes.

"I'm not suggesting that everybody in the country should be on medication," he said. "I see it as an alternative pathway of helping people who are ill. But it's going to turn out to be a cost-effective way of managing these problems."

Obesity more in the mind for some

AUSTRALIANS who know that they are overweight are more at risk of developing depression than those who think they are in good shape, according to a study.

Research carried out by health experts from the University of Sydney and Deakin University has revealed that people who think they are obese have a 50 per cent chance of experiencing high levels of psychological distress.

The study found that dealing with the psychological impact of body image may be a bigger problem than stamping out obesity or eating disorders.

Researcher Dr Evan Atlantis said that the results of the study, to be published in the International Journal of Obesity, revealed actual bodyweight was not a factor in whether someone developed depression.

"Weight perceptions that deviate from societal 'ideals' are more closely and consistently associated with psychological distress than actual weight status," Dr Atlantis said.

"Clearly both obesity and underweight are hazardous to health… but our findings suggest that public health initiatives targeting psychological distress at the population level may need to promote healthy attitudes towards bodyweight and self-acceptance, regardless of weight status."

Dr Atlantis said that both men and women had equal chances of becoming distressed about their weight.

The research focussed on data compiled in the Australian National Health Survey of nearly 30,000 people in 2004-2005.

According to the survey, 62 per cent of men and 45 per cent of women were overweight or obese.

But just 32 per cent of men and 37 per cent of women classified themselves as actually being overweight.
