Sunbed users are increasing their risk of developing a life-threatening form of skin cancer by three-quarters, experts have warned.

A report has established that using sunbeds from an early age increases the risk of malignant melanoma by 75 per cent. It was released by Cancer Research UK as part of the SunSmart campaign, which will focus this year on the dangers of sunbeds.

It comes after the British Association of Dermatologists called for under-18s to be banned from using tanning beds and for tighter controls on unmanned and coin operated booths.

Skin cancer is the fastest rising cancer in Britain, with cases increasing by almost half in the last decade. Almost 9,000 cases of malignant melanoma are diagnosed in the UK annually and more than 1,800 die from the disease each year.

The SunSmart campaigners warn that over-exposure to UV rays in the tanning salon can prove as dangerous as getting burnt on the beach.

It is a common misconception that sunbeds have had "harmful rays removed" and are "a safe way to tan" but the intensity of some UV rays from sunbeds can be 10-15 times higher than that of the midday sun, the researchers say.

Repeated exposure to UV damages the DNA in skin cells, which increases the risk of skin cancer and makes skin age faster.

Rebecca Russell, the SunSmart campaign manager, said: "The results of our survey make for a stark warning to young people about the dangers of indoor tanning.

"You can't always see the damage that UV does straight away. It builds up over time. But every time you use a sunbed you are harming your skin and increasing your risk of skin cancer. Cancer Research UK is particularly concerned about young teenagers using sunbeds and is working with the Government to review options for possible regulation of the industry.

"We would like legislation to prevent under-18s using sunbeds and to ban unmanned coin-operated sunbeds, which can attract under-age and vulnerable users."

The SunSmart survey shows that eight out of 10 sunbed users start using the machines before the age of 35.

The Government is considering ways to restrict access by children to sunbeds and provide clearer information about the risks associated with tanning booths.

A spokesman for the Department of Health said: "We intend to gather more information about the number and distribution of sunbeds and the scale of sunbed use by minors. These measures are part of our review of options for possible regulation of the sunbed industry, including coin-operated sunbeds.

"The Government advises against the use of sunbeds for cosmetic purposes."

Professor Mike Richards, the Government's national cancer director, said: "It is a matter of particular concern that children may be getting access to sunbeds and it is also important that they should have information about the dangers of excessive exposure to UV."
