Obesity: Not just a 'condition'

KUWAIT: The World Health Organization (WHO) released a statement recently suggesting that the prevalence of overweight and obesity is increasing at an alarming level. Both developed and developing countries are affected. According to WHO, overweight and obesity are now common that they are replacing the more traditional public health concerns such as malnutrition and infectious diseases as some of the most significant contributors to ill health.

The statement released by WHO was part of the opening remark made by Dr. Yousef Bo Abbas, Al-Amiri Hospital Endocrinology Consultant and current president of Kuwait Obesity Association (KOA), the main speaker on late Wednesday's public seminar held at the Marina Hotel.

The seminar, which was aimed to educating the public about obesity, its treatment and the government's response, was held in cooperation with the Kuwait Medical Association, KOA and Abbott Laboratories, a leading pharmaceutical and medical research company. Among the speakers were Dr. Yousef Bo Abbas, Dr. Nadia Sulaiman Al-Ali and Dr. Huda Duwaisan. Dr Bo Abbas said that over 75 percent of overweight patients are obese. He acknowledged the fact that in Kuwait, a number of obese patients start in a very you

That is why we are urging lawmakers to enact a law that can incorporate obesity subject to school curricula," he noted. Obesity or overweight condition can vary, depending on their ethnic origin and the build of their body. He elaborated that the risk of obesity reaches its peak when the excess of fat is around the waist and covering the abdominal organs, such as the liver.

Bo Abbas also mentioned some diseases attributed to obesity which include type 2 diabetes (61%), heart disease (17%), gallbladder disease (30%), breast cancer (11%), endometrial cancer (34%) and colon cancer (11%). They also found in studies that inactive sex life can also be attributed to obesity.

Dr. Nadia Sulaiman Al-Ali advised the government to seriously tackle the issue of obesity, as it is not just a mere condition, but a disease that needs proper treatment and doctors' intervention. On her presentation, Dr. Nadia screened a slideshow showing erroneous reports about obesity. "The state media reported recently that anti-obesity drugs can cause madness or even death. This news article was completely wrong. I hope for media to help spread right information for the benefit of the citizens and publ
ic," she reiterated.

Dr. Al-Ali strongly recommended a lifestyle modification that includes a proper diet and lots of physical activities, but added that pharmacotherapy and surgery are the next steps to lifestyle check. "We are not recommending obese people to immediately jump into surgery, we usually observe and evaluate their conditions and give a period of three to six months to treat them without the need of surgery. When we prescribe drugs we normally tell patients that drugs will not cure them, but will merely reduce w

The three doctors discussed some scientific studies and highlighted names and drugs capable of treating patients which they said are reputable and are trusted by doctors around the world.
