Don’t let obesity shorten pet’s life

It's estimated that as many as 40 percent of dogs in this country are overweight.

While there are important hormonal contributions to weight gain, and there are drugs that can increase a pet's appetite, the overwhelming majority of overweight pets are obese due to an imbalance in the energy-exercise equation. That means too many groceries going in for the amount of energy Spot is expending.

We feed too much dog food, give too many treats and give a bite of pork chop here and a spoonful of ice cream there. We get busy and complacent, and those weekly trips to the dog park become less frequent and ultimately nonexistent.

Research and clinical experience tell us that obesity predisposes or exacerbates a host of medical conditions. A recent study showed that between two groups of dogs, one given unrestricted food intake and the other fed 75 percent of the amount consumed by the nonrestricted group, the calorie-restricted dogs lived nearly two years longer.

Obese dogs and cats have an increased incidence of arthritis, ligament weakness, respiratory difficulties (especially the "short-nosed" breeds, like pugs and Persians), heart disease and metabolic disease such as diabetes. They also seem to have less resistance to infectious disease. Obese animals tend to be predisposed to skin disease, and giving birth is more difficult due to occlusion of the birth canal by excess fat.

In addition, clinical evaluation by your veterinarian is complicated when your pet is obese. Any veterinarian will tell you that important clues to underlying disease may be missed simply because we cannot accurately feel an obese pet's abdomen or hear its heart. Obesity increases anesthetic time and makes procedures such as intravenous catheter placement difficult. Obesity has even been linked to an increased risk of several kinds of cancers in dogs.

I should be able to easily feel a dog's ribs without digging for them. And when I view the dog's back from above, a waist should be apparent. From the side, I should be able to see the dog's abdomen tucked up.

Normal cats have more abdominal fat than dogs, but the abdomen should not sag, ribs should be palpable, and there should be a waist.

For many dogs, an increase in daily exercise is all that's needed to get them on the road to a healthier weight. Adding more play time per day with your cat will not only increase its calorie expenditure but will keep its mind off food as well.

Feeding an appropriate amount of a reduced calorie food is an important component of any weight loss plan.

At our clinic, we give our clients a feeding worksheet that tells them the exact amount of food to feed their pet in order to achieve the pet's ideal weight and the amount of time it should take the pet to reach that weight if the plan is followed.

Supplementing the food with high fiber, low calorie vegetables, like canned or frozen green beans, helps dogs feel full while receiving less food volume.
